A conviction we hold
The sanctuary, explained simply
The sanctuary can sound complicated — an old tent, strange furniture, animal sacrifices. But God designed every piece of it as a picture of one thing: how a holy God makes a way to live with people who are not. Read simply, the sanctuary is a love story, and Jesus is at the center of it.
God’s big desire: to live with us
The whole point is in one sentence God spoke to Israel: "let them make me a sanctuary; that I may dwell among them" (Exodus 25:8). God did not want to be far off. He gave a blueprint for a tent so that a wandering, imperfect people could have Him near. The sanctuary is God moving toward us.
A tour in plain words
Picture three spaces, moving inward:
- The courtyard — an altar where a lamb was offered, and a basin for washing. Here the message is: sin costs a life, and you can be made clean.
- The Holy Place — bread, light, and a table of incense (prayer). Here God provides, gives light, and listens.
- The Most Holy Place — the ark, with God’s presence above the mercy seat. Here is the heart of it: mercy covering a broken law.
Every piece points to Jesus
None of it was the point in itself — it was a "shadow of good things to come" (Hebrews 10:1). When John saw Jesus he said, "Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world" (John 1:29). Jesus is the Lamb on the altar, the bread, the light, and the mercy seat. The whole tent was a small drawing of a very big Savior.
Jesus is your Priest, right now
Here is the part that touches today. The sacrifices ended at the cross, but the ministry did not. Jesus "ever liveth to make intercession" for us (Hebrews 7:25). "We have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne" (Hebrews 8:1). You do not approach God alone or on your own record — Someone who loves you is representing you in heaven this very moment.
Why it brings comfort, not fear
The sanctuary answers the quiet question, "Can someone like me really come to God?" Its answer is yes — through a Lamb already given and a Priest who is for you. "Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace" (Hebrews 4:16). It is an invitation, not a hurdle.
